What I help with
People come to therapy for all sorts of reasons
Sometimes there is a clear problem that has been building for a long time. Sometimes something has changed more recently, and life no longer feels manageable in the way it once did. I work with adults experiencing a range of emotional and psychological difficulties, with particular experience in PTSD, insomnia, social anxiety and depression.
PTSD and trauma-related difficulties
I work with people experiencing PTSD and the effects of overwhelming or distressing experiences. This may include intrusive memories, nightmares, feeling constantly on edge, avoiding reminders of what happened, or finding that your sense of safety has changed.
PTSD can develop after many different kinds of experience. In my work, I have supported people affected by military experiences, serious accidents, abuse, childbirth trauma and sexual violence.
Insomnia and sleep difficulties
Sleep problems can affect every part of life. You may struggle to fall asleep, wake repeatedly during the night, wake too early, or find that your mind becomes more active the moment you try to rest.
Insomnia can exist on its own, but it can also sit alongside anxiety, low mood, stress or past experiences. Therapy can help make sense of the patterns that may be keeping the problem going and begin to change them.
Social anxiety
Social anxiety can involve more than shyness. It may mean feeling intensely self-conscious, fearing judgement, avoiding certain situations, replaying conversations afterwards, or finding that everyday interactions take far more out of you than they seem to for other people.
Depression
Depression can affect mood, energy, motivation, concentration and your sense of connection to other people. At times it can feel heavy, flat or difficult to explain. For some people it shows up as sadness. For others it is more a sense of numbness, irritability, exhaustion or feeling unlike themselves.
A note on fit
You don't need a precise label to begin
If you are unsure whether what you are experiencing fits neatly into one of these categories, that is completely fine. You do not need to arrive with a precise label in order to begin a conversation about therapy.
